PostSubject: Eastern Front   Sat Feb 12, 2011 8:54 pm

I am considering doing a WWII Eastern Front - Op Barbarossa RP now that Zhukov is here. Currently I am researching German organizations. I am working on a Panzer Grenadier Division. I have one for Pre-1944 and one for 1944 on. I also have Panzer, Falschirmjager, SS Panzer and Volksgrenadier Divisions. I'll post them in The Barracks as I complete them.

Give me some input.

Haven't seen any input yet, but I'm running with this idea. I've been working on some back ground information like unit organizations and small arms. If anyone would like to provide some input in the Armory or Barracks, please do so. Do some research and post what you find. Some of the things we will look for are:

Soviet Small Arms
Soviet Armored Fighting Vehicles
Soviet Military organizations (working on this one)
German Small Arms (started this one)
German military organizations (working on this one)
German armored fighting vehicles.

Once we have sufficient back ground data, think about what unit you wish to portray. I do intend to begin with June 22, 1941: Operation Barbarosa.

I think that the Russian Campaign would be a great first addition. I know for certain I would like to see some hardcore tank RP. I also think that with the right amount of historical research we could even RP people who were there and then just fill in the conversations they had. Russian & German airforce??

By all means, start a thread in the Armory. One for German Aircraft and one for Soviet Aircraft. I'll add a few more to the threads I have going.

I am thinking of using 2nd Das Reich as our focal for the Eastern Front RP. On 22 June 1941 they were assigned to XXIV Motorized Infantry Korps (24th Corps). The motorized designation infers that they used 3-ton trucks to move their infantry formations rather than halftracks.

The 2nd SS PzGr Division's initial mission for the opening stages of Op Barbarosa were to regulate traffic along the axis of advance of the 2nd Panzer Group. When the 2nd SS was required to move forward, they did not have vehicles initially and had to walk to the front. A few of the units found rides but most walked.

28 June 1941: 2nd SS received its first mission to force a river crossing over the Bug between Citva and Dukora.
22 July 1941: 2nd SS attacks to take the east side of Yelnya along the river Desna. Once Yelnya was taken, the 2nd SS remained in position and defended the small Russian town for the next 4 weeks.
September 1941: 2nd SS moves south to assist with the largest encirclement of Soviet Troops to date at Kiev, Ukraine. At Kiev, 5 Russian Armies were destroyed. A million Russians had been killed, wounded or taken prisoner.
24 September - 2 October 1941: 2nd SS pulled out of the line for rest and refit
2 October: Operation Typhoon begins around Moscow.
4 October - November 1941: 2nd SS follows the 10th Panzer Division to take Kirchev and Ladishino. The 2nd SS are to swing north from this location and attack the town of Yuchnov and continue the encirclement of Moscow.
27 November: 2nd SS move on toward Moscow.

Note: As this time line moves on, the temperatures are getting colder and colder. On the night of 27 Nov 41, the temperatures around Moscow were 32 degrees below zero Fahrenheit. The Germans were ill prepared for the harsh temperatures. A few looted winter clothing from dead Russians.
Quote :
The 2nd SS Grenadiers froze in their slit trenches which they had dug in the snow. 2nd SS took several casualties from Frost bite alone. The numbers of combat losses and non-combat losses was so great, that the 2nd SS could barely hold on. But the Fuhrer ordered that no unit would withdraw from their forward positions.

January, 1942: Gshatsk, Russia (outside Moscow)
February, 1942: Rzhev, Russia (west of Gshatsk)
March - May, 1942: Jackboot Wood battles (south of Gshatsk)
1 June - 10 June: 2nd SS moves from Russia to Germany for R&R.
1 July - 15 January 1943: 2nd SS sent to LeMans, France served as Occupation troops

Effective 9 November 1942 the Division is now titled, 2nd SS Panzer Grenadier Division "Das Reich" The Division added a battalion of 3 companies of Pzkw III & IV Panzers. At this time, the 3rd Battalions of each of the Regiments received sufficient Sd.Kfz. 251 halftracks to move their grenadiers. The 1st and 2nd Battalions still rely on walking or truck transport.

30 December 1942: Fuhrer creates the I SS Panzer Korps consisting of the 1st SS "Leibstandarte", 2nd SS "Das Reich" and 3rd SS "Totenkopf".
9 January - April 1943: 2nd SS fight around Kharkov. Its Panzer Battalion receives Pzkw VI Tigers. During the fighting around Kharkov, the remaining Grenadiers received Sd.Kfz.251 halftracks. Das Reich captured a sufficient number of T-34s to stand up a regiment of Panzers. 1st Battalion (Tigers), 2nd Battalion (Tigers) & 3rd Battalion (T-34s painted with German insignia).
July: Kursk Operation Zitadele
July - August: River Mius
September - April, 1944: Fighting retreat
