Time: 0500 Hrs Z 9 Jun 1944 (D-Day +3)

Task: You must organize your fighting force and prepare a defense. You can expect elements of the 2nd SS "Das Reich" to attempt to penetrate your bridgehead defense sometime in the next 24 hours.

Condition: You are a Captain in the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment (PIR), 101st Infantry Division (Airborne). Your unit was dropped near Les Ponts Douve. Due to navigational problems, weather and intense enemy Anti-Aircraft fire, your unit is scattered throughout the area. In fact, elements of the 82nd Infantry Division (Airborne) are also intermingled with your own 101st ID soldiers. You have no radios.

The US 1st and 29th Infantry Divisions established a foothold on the Omaha beachhead on D-Day but due to enemy resistance, they have not been able to relieve your position at Les Ponts Douve. Your mission is to hold the two bridges immediately southeast of the small Normandy hamlet and prevent German Armor from penetrating into the American Sector.

Your adhoc fighting force consists of the following:

Captain (you) - Thompson SMG, M1911 .45 ACP, bayonet, 4 frag grenades, entrenching tool, 8x 30-round mags (SMG) & 4x 8-round mags (Pistol)

Private - M1919 tripod, M1 Garand, bayonet, 4 frag grenades, entrenching tool, 20x 8-round clips of .30-06 ammo & 8x 100-round belts (.30 cal)
3x Private First Class - Thompson SMG, M1911 .45 ACP, bayonet, 4 frag grenades, entrenching tool, 8x 30-round mags (SMG) & 4x 8-round mags (Pistol)
2x Private First Class - M1 Garand, Bazooka Rocket Launcher, bayonet, 4 frag grenades, entrenching tool, 20x 8-round clips of .30-06 ammo & 6 rounds of Bazooka ammo

Half of this unit is made up of soldiers from the 506th PIR Regimental Pathfinders. The other half is made up of soldiers from the Company H, 2nd Battalion, 505th PIR, 82nd ID (ABN). You also have 15 Anti-Personnel mines, 40 1-Lb blocks of composition B, fuze cord and blasting caps with an assortment of crimping tools amongst the troops of your unit.

Standard: Using creative Role Playing design, you have No Less than 24 hours to defend before elements of the 29th Infantry Division can arrive from the coast to reinforce your defense.

Notes:
This scenario is based on the movie, Saving Private Ryan. Historical accuracy suggests that this area was the responsibility of a unit of Pathfinders in the 506th PIR known as the Filthy Thirteen. One member of the unit was a native American and the unit as a whole shaved their heads leaving a strip cross the top or "Mohawk" haircut. They also wore warpaint when they jumped into Normandy. Their mission was to blow up the bridges over the Douve, but most of this elite fighting unit was killed in action. PFC Jack Agnew of Abington, PA received the Bronze Star and Purple Heart for his heroics in and around Les Ponts Douve. He was one of the few original members of the Filthy Thirteen to survive the action at Les Ponts Douve. The Filthy Thirteen provided the inspiration for the movie, The Dirty Dozen

The 2nd SS Das Reich did not arrive in Normandy until 21 June 1944 after the 101st took Carentan. In keeping with the theme of Saving Private Ryan I've elected to use them as the Opposition Force (OPFOR). You will note from the map, that Carentan is five hundred meters southeast of the bridge over the Douve River.

This is a good starter milhis RP. Just follow the steps below and you can get started.

1. Organize the platoon as listed above. Obviously, your primary character is the Captain. You can make him a special Staff officer in the Regimental HQs S3 section. You may want to keep people who know each other in the same squads. I failed to do that in my first attempt.
My attempt at organizing the platoon:

2. Once you know what resources you have, you can start creating a defense. In the example above, you have the Platoon HQs section consisting of the PL and PSG. You have no contact with higher and do not need a radio or a runner. If you do need a runner, you can always take one from a squad. In this example, you have three squads of 6 or 7 soldiers each, two MG teams, two Bazooka teams and a sniper.

3. The key aspect of your mission is to prevent German Armor from crossing the two bridges over the Douve River. This photograph displays the two bridges from the south. You'll notice the southern bridge is sturdy and made of stone. The Northern bridge is a steel girder bridge. I believe we can safely assume that only the southern bridge was available in June, 1944. Therefore, we can dispense with the Northern bridge. It does not exist for our purposes. Notice how wide this river is. You can swim it in less than a minute. No doubt a fully encumbered soldier would take longer and die in the process. Regardless, this southern bridge is definitely strong enough to support the weight of a Pzkw V or VI (Panther or Tiger Tank) that may come across from the southeast.

4. Although other areas of the sector will not support the crossing of armored vehicles, there should be some attention given to various crossing points for Infantry.

5. Once you have organized your platoon, the way you want it to look, please post it in this thread. You will refer back to it later.

6. Once you have posted your platoon, I will introduce the scenario in an In Character thread in the appropriate forum above.
